European Commission commits to provide humanitarian assistance to Yemen.
At a high-level pledging event for Yemen co-hosted by the United Nations (UN), Sweden, and Switzerland, the European Union and its member states made a commitment of €154 million for 2022 to respond to the immediate needs of the 20 million-plus Yemeni people experiencing dire humanitarian situations due to ongoing hostilities in the nation since 2015. Approximately €135 million of the pledged aid will provide shelter, water, food and other necessities as well as emergency services. The remaining funding will go to development projects and support the UN-led and local peace process for conflict resolution. The European Union is a recipient of four Shining World Leadership Awards for Humanitarianism, two Shining World Leadership Awards for Peace, and a Shining World Leadership Award for Earth Protection; as well as a laureate of two Shining World Leadership Awards for Humanitarianism and Shining World Leadership Awards for Compassion, Unconditional World Care and True Caring. Water reservoir in USA falls to record low.
The second-largest water reservoir in the United States, Lake Powell, fell below 1,074 meters, its lowest level since it was filled over 50 years ago. The reservoir is located on the border between the states of Utah and Arizona in the western part of the country. The region is experiencing an ongoing megadrought that is the worst in 1,200 years, while the higher temperatures from the climate crisis have exacerbated the drought’s severity by 42%. The low water levels in Lake Powell endanger supplies of water and hydroelectric energy to millions of people. Dr. Justin Mankin with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Drought Task Force stated that the situation with Lake Powell “is really putting us in uncharted territory, legally and politically and socially, economically.” We pray that conditions soon improve and Lake Powell refills quickly. World’s largest solar tree installed in India.
The structure that resembles a tree has a panel surface area of 309.83 square meters and is certified by Guinness World Records as the largest solar tree in the world. Constructed at the Centre of Excellence for Farm Machinery, in Ludhiana, Punjab state, by the Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute, the tree generates 53.6 kilowatt peak and an estimated 160-200 kilowatt-hours per day. The solar tree’s use is envisioned for farming environments. It can enable distributed power generation to support various agricultural activities, including charging electric farm vehicles, running irrigation pumps and operating cold storage systems, which can increase the shelf life of farm produce as well as reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Singapore furnishes medical aid to Palestinians and opens diplomatic office.
The government of Singapore recently provided over US$550,000 in healthcare-related assistance to the Palestinian Authority (PA), which included items to help it deal with the COVID-19 pandemic. Included in the aid package were 30,000 reusable masks, 10,000 PCR testing kits, as well as postgraduate scholarships and healthcare courses to help train medical professionals and health policymakers. Singapore also opened a representative office in Ramallah in the West Bank to coordinate technical assistance to the PA. Polish hero veterinarian risks crossing into Ukraine to rescue animal-people.
Dr. Jakub Kotowicz, a 32-year-old veterinarian, and his team have risked coming to Ukraine from Poland multiple times to save trapped animal-persons, including Vira, a dog-person with a bullet in her spine, and Sasha, a two-month-old pygmy goat-person with abnormal legs who Dr. Kotowicz intends to adopt. Over two weeks, Dr. Kotowicz and his group rescued 200 cat- and 60 dog-people from Lviv. He completed one of the missions despite having been deprived of sleep for five days. The rescuers are now preparing the furry friends for adoption. Luckily, two feline-persons have been reunited with their caregivers. Rescued orphan elephant-person returns home with calf.
Twenty-three years after being saved as a baby by the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (Trust) in Kenya, proud mom Icholta returned home to introduce her previous caregivers to her new baby girl, Izzy. The loving pachyderm was saved from a waterhole when she was just weeks old and then spent time at the Trust’s nursery as part of a group of eight youngsters. At the Trust’s Voi Reintegration Unit, lovely Icholta learned the skills necessary to live in the wild. In 2016, she gave birth to Inca and, in January 2022, brought Izzy and Inca to visit Trust staff members. It was a beautiful reunion for all – rescuers, mama elephant-person, and her adorable son and daughter. The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is a Shining World Compassion Award recipient. Supreme Master Ching Hai has previously made humble contributions totaling US$30,000 to support the Trust’s projects. Beloved Master and the Supreme Master TV team, On the birthday of Manjusri Bodhisattva last year, I tagged along with brothers and sisters to rescue 25 animal-persons in a slaughterhouse. It was my first time participating in a lifesaving action. The morning when the 25 of us set off was overcast and rainy. I played Master’s Buddha Chanting. Master’s voice and Blessing Power shielded us all the way to the slaughterhouse. There, we worked together and saved 25 lives, including cow-, horse-, donkey-, and lamb-people.
One incident left an indelible impression on my mind. When we were leading an old cow-person to the transport vehicle, she thought that she was being taken to be slaughtered. So she sat down crying and crying, refusing to get into the vehicle. After we comforted her and explained to her, she finally agreed to get into the vehicle. When the last cow-person was on board to be taken to the sanctuary, the overcast sky suddenly cleared up, and some colored and cross-shaped clouds appeared. I knew that it was a manifestation of Master’s Blessings and Godses in Heaven, encouraging and supporting our effort to save more lovable animal-people. At the rescue site, many passersby were drawn to join in. Three oil refinery workers helped and took a group photo with us.
After the lifesaving action, a sister wrote a poem: “Saving lives on the birthday of Manjusri Bodhisattva We vow to speak out for the animals Compassion will inspire love on Earth We are all looking forward to a vegan world Heaven was shedding tears in the morning To cleanse the minds of the wayward ones As we cheered the end of the slaughterhouse The rainbows and auspicious clouds filled the sky May love bloom in everyone’s heart May all beings be as one.”
