The world is going through an outbreak of bird flu. It began in October 2021. Close to 153 million birds have been culled in the past two years alone. That’s right, Japan has killed over 17 million chickens this season. The virus can lead to severe pneumonia, so it’s very important to handle dead chickens infected with avian influenza with care. Japan has 26 prefectures or provinces. Bird flu has broken out in all 26 of them.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), over the past two years, bird flu outbreaks have occurred in 48 of the nation’s 50 states. But this virus has also been infecting mammals, most recently dairy cows, in five different states. But cow-folk are not the only mammals that have contracted avian influenza. The H5N1 virus has now infected cat-, fox-, bear-, goat-, seal-, and even polar bear-people. In Antarctica, researchers recently discovered the bodies of hundreds of Emperor penguin-people, all of whom had died from bird flu.

The WHO states that if the H5N1 virus mutates and becomes transmissible to humans, the results could be catastrophic. The Chief Medical Advisor with Reliant Health Services, Dr. Michael Daignault, explains why we should be extremely concerned about a bird flu pandemic. “What’s concerning, is that it’s previously only been spread from a bird to a human. And bird flu has a 50% mortality rate. Of the 900 people that have had bird flu in the last 20 years, 50% have died.”

Our Most Courageous Supreme Master Ching Hai (vegan) frequently reminds us that the only one way to prevent zoonotic diseases and, indeed, all future pandemics, is a global shift to the vegan lifestyle. “Humans don’t understand that these situations, these sicknesses are to caution sentient beings not to kill each other anymore, that they should not commit acts of cruelty, like confining animal-people in such anguish and miserable conditions. But humans haven’t yet understood. Thus, they continue to do those things.”
