To keep berry shrubs from making a mess on the sidewalk, place a bedsheet on the ground beneath your mulberry tree or blueberry bush in your garden in the early morning ‒ this will function as a berry basket and catch the ripe fruits as they fall. In the late evening, gather up the sheets filled with berries and bring them indoors. You can also create a hammock by tying the corners of the sheet to the lowest branches or to four posts secured into the ground. This may be a better alternative since it decreases sidewalk staining and provides a soft landing for the fragile fruit. It also minimizes insect infestation on fallen fruit, protecting their lives from passing foot traffic. A final suggestion is to ask some family or friends to hold the corners of the bedsheet while you take a broom, mop, or rake to gently shake the berries out of the tree.
