Here's a tip on how to prepare for a nuclear fallout or residual radioactive material such as dust and ash that is produced after a nuclear weapon explodes. There are some guidelines to help you increase your readiness for this kind of critical scenario.
First and foremost, you must get inside right away ‒ it is safest to take shelter in the middle of a concrete or brick building. Then, take off any contaminated clothing and clean any skin area that were unprotected and might have been exposed to a fallout. Avoid further contamination by not touching your eyes, mouth, or nose. Stay put inside for a minimum of 72 hours, but it is safer if you can hold on for two weeks. Be sure to keep your animal companions inside as well.
Staying up to date is crucial, and it is recommended to keep a dynamo- or battery-powered radio around.
Only consume and drink packaged products and frozen or refrigerated food. Steer clear of tap water and drink bottled water or beverages instead. If you don’t have these available, then it is safe to consume water from the toilet tank or water heater. The very last resort is tap water.
Be prepared and have all necessary supplies ready. It is advisable to locate shelters in the area where you spend most of your time in advance.
